How to set up a small business in Dubai?

 

According to the data released by the Department of Economic Development (DED) of Dubai – there are around 3,700 new business licenses issued every day in Dubai. These figures clearly represent a huge demand on small businesses and self-employment opportunities for individuals looking forward to gainfully engage and contribute towards the development and growth of this commercial hub of Middle East. However, knowing how to set up a small business is crucial before you actually decide about pursuing it as an occupation. So here we go.

Before you start your own business or look for ways of starting a new business, first ensure that you have acquired all legal formalities such as registrations and procedures required by local authorities like DED/ Municipality/ Income Tax etc. Once formalities are completed, you will be issued with a trade license known as 'Al-Ijara' in Arabic. This is the first important step for starting your own business in Dubai.

Following are few guidelines which will give you a brief idea about how to start a small business in Dubai.

· Decide what kind of business or company you want to set up. This is crucial as it determines the type of trade license you are required to get in order to engage in that particular businesses/ activities.

There are around 32 types of trades/ industries authorized by DED including retail, wholesale, companies etc. The list is available here . You need not be restricted by this list alone but can also venture into other areas if they are not included in the prohibited ones mentioned under this link.

· Once you have decided on your line of work, then comes registering your business with respective authority depending on the type of trade. For example, if you want to start any kind of trading business then you need to register it with Department of Economic Development (DED) of Dubai.

On the other hand, if your business involves construction or installation of equipment then you need to go through municipality for necessary registration. However, getting a license from Municipality is just not enough but also requires authorization from local police department as well as Civil Defense.

· Once you have got all required registrations and licenses i.e. 'Al-Ijara' making your company 100% legal in UAE, now comes the most important part advertisement . First thing first… advertisements are restricted in United Arab Emirates so be careful with what kinds of ads you place so.
